Question 12 marksGrade 3-4
The graph shows the velocity of a skateboarder slowing to a stop. Find the skateboarder's deceleration, in m/s2.
What are the common mistakes in Travel Graphs?
When a pupil makes one of these on Revision Workshop, the marking engine names the mistake and explains it, instead of just marking the answer wrong.
Reads off a distance value where speed was asked for on a kinematics graph
Gave the distance travelled (10 km) instead of the speed - the gradient of the outward-journey line
Inverts the rate, using time over distance instead of distance over time, when reading a kinematics graph
Calculated time ÷ distance instead of distance ÷ time, inverting the speed
Multiplies by the full strip width instead of half the strip width when applying the trapezium rule
Multiplies the bracket total by h = 2 instead of h/2 = 1, giving 97 x 2 = 194 instead of 97 x 1 = 97.

Show the worked solution
Deceleration is the gradient of the line: velocity falls from 5 m/s to 0 over 10 seconds. 10−05−0=0.5 m/s2. M1A1
Question 22 marksGrade 4-5
The graph shows a cyclist's distance from home during a 5-hour ride. Work out the cyclist's speed, in km/h, during the return journey home.
Show the worked solution
During the return journey the cyclist travels from 8 km back to 0 km, a distance of 8 km, taking from t=3 to t=5, i.e. 2 hours. Speed is the gradient of this section of the graph: speed=timedistance=28=4
Question 32 marksGrade 4-5
The graph shows a train's distance from its starting station during a journey. Work out the train's speed, in km/h, during the return journey.
Question 42 marksGrade 4-5
The graph shows the total distance a hiker has walked during a 3-hour hike, including a rest stop. Work out the hiker's walking speed, in km/h, after the rest stop.
Question 56 marksGrade 6-7
Izzy runs an 80-metre race in 14 seconds. During the first 6 seconds her speed increases at a constant rate (from 0 to speed u). During the last 8 seconds her speed increases at a different constant rate, reaching v m/s at 14 seconds, where v is 2 m/s more than her speed at 6 seconds (v = u+2).
(a) Work out her acceleration during the last 8 seconds, stating units.
(b) Work out the value of v.
